Barbara J.'s Story
After college, I worked at Horizon House as a psychiatric social worker once I decided that teaching 8th grade French wasn't working out. There I acquired a 6'5" 260 pound psychotic stalker and spent so much time in court with him that I left social work and went to law school, graduating in 1978.
I became a prosecutor, first in the Phila. D.A.'s office and, for 24+ years in the U.S. Attorney's Office, criminal division, where I prosecuted mostly international drug smugglers, local murdering drug lords, and a lowlife named Robert Stephan Lipka who (while we were all in high school and college) spied for the KGB during the Vietnam war. (That last case was more fun than any human should be allowed to have! Google Lipka's name for the details.)
I left the U.S. Attorney's Office in 2005, and am now in-house counsel to a large commercial printing company, practicing civil law. It's a good fi...Expand for more
t since I love paper and ink and have done graphic arts.
In addition to my more than full time day job, I helped my husband (Adan Saavedra, a brilliantly talented chef) run Paloma, our fine-dining BYOB restaurant until we retired from the restaurant business in December 2016. Adan now provides private chef services serving his high-end Mexican-French cuisine at dinner parties in clients' homes. I still do all the desserts. (Adan was a semifinalist for the James Beard award for Best Chef/Midatlantic in 2011.)
In my spare time (yeah, right) I make glass beads and design and make jewelry. That will be my post-retirement career in a year or two. You can see more on my website, barbcohan DOT com.
I'm still a passionate Phillies fan (yes, even through their recent suckage) and attend their Baseball 101 Clinic for Women twice a year.
Looking forward to seeing all of you at our 50th reunion!!!
